It’s already been fifteen years since I wrote a reflexion with reference to the 25th anniversary of The Dirty Scums. Although I had missed their early years, it was not difficult at all to tell their lifestory to the more or less fanatic followers of this “longest running” Belgian punkband. The unique affiliation we could continue after all those contactless years, as if there hadn’t been any interruption, made sure that the words simply flowed, out of my pen to the paper still in those days.
When Dirty Pik asked me whether I wanted to do the same again for their new retrospective compilation, I was torn by doubts at first. In that decade and a half a lot has changed indeed. To start with, society has changed, and sadly enough not always in a positive way. A lot of problems we rebelled against as punx in the first 25 years, are still there unfortunately and have become maybe even more extreme - but crazier than a Trumpian world it really doesn’t have to get. Also the “Symptoms of the grown-ups” I referred to back then have done their job the last fifteen years: punkies from the early days have come and gone - people take different roads, that’s just the way it is - but sometimes punk is wrongfully considered to be a sin of one’s youth. Also the rather small-scale world of gigs, music pubs and houses, and the accompanying engaged (punk)music lovers has become maybe even smaller or has even partly disappeared. A wise man (Vortn Jan) said not so long ago with reference to some passings in the punk scene, that the world of punk we have built ourselves as eightiespunx, is slowly disappearing. He is probably right, but nevertheless that small world will be very well documented on the elaborate website of the Scums. Moreover the music business had a hard time after digitalization, the Internet and other Youtube-channels. We don’t necessarily need to lose any sleep over this, because on the other hand it opened opportunities to a larger audience as well. Anyway some of these circumstances caused our contacts to be less frequent and intense than before and therefore I thought my baggage was smaller indeed to be able to summarize the last fifteen years of Scumpunk.
On stage
If I picture a somewhat negative world view as an introduxion to this second celebration compilation “The Next 15 Yearz”, this is actually the point I want to make: quite on the contrary indeed, ‘cause however the three members of the Scums have gradually reached the age of “Retired Punx”, the changing time spirit has clearly had no impact whatsoever on the punkband nor on their punk attitude and their Do It Yourself mentality. At first sight you could conclude from the above that there were less gigs, and that was indeed what happened in the world of punk music in a way, but the giglist and names the band played with, show that they still had ten to fifteen gigs yearly and that on stage they could accompany just about the cream of the Belgian punkscene, such as: Aroma Di Amore, Belgian Asociality, De Brassers, Definitivos, Funeral Dress, the Kids, … They shared the stage even with a number of renowned international bands/legends: Anti Nowhere League (GBR), Casualties (USA), Chelsea (GBR), Conflict (GBR), Ritchie Ramone (USA), Sham 69 (GBR), Stupids (GBR), Tankard (DEU), Varukers (GBR), Vice Squad (GBR), …
On record
When you put the titles of their three studio CDs of the latest fifteen years next to each other, you aren’t able to get round it: “Made to Last” in 2011, “The Past is Back” in 2017 and their latest “Flashback to ‘77” of 2020, clearly refer to the past and make a link with the future as well. Looking back I would say that you could also have used the titles the other way round. Excellent, very own versions of classix play a bigger part as well, probably a result of their side projects with The Thirsty Scums (with tributes to the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and finally the whole punkscene) and Dirty Pik’s family band Freddy & the D’oghz as well. The writing of this retrospection partly happened during a holiday week in the Sierra Nevada, in “Sunny Spain”, also an old song of The Dirty Scums. The reason why I get back so easily to the good old times and the music of back then just like them ? Undoubtedly these were golden years for the music, inspired by the society of that time, and maybe most of all because it reminds us of the times when we were still young as well. Ramones and also AC/DC were sometimes said to repeat the same over and over again when new records appeared, and I can imagine that critix think the same of The Dirty Scums. But then again, is not giving in to commerce, poppy tendencies and other hypes not the strongest quality ? Much later poppunk was only a decoction of what punk has to be in my humble opinion. In spite of this every new CD of the Scums still shows a noticeable evolution, the greatest probably on a pure musical level. However they are mainly beerdrinkers, they seem to show some qualities of wine as well: the older, the better their songs are - and the better they sound. Technically speaking especially the last “Flashback to ‘77” must be the best of what they ever produced. The guitars come out more and better through the combination of different guitar lines and the double singing voices become stronger with every CD. There Dirty Keez as the second singer takes a more prominent position bit by bit, whereas formerly it was rather restricted to backing vocals. It seems sooner or later every bird is known by its note and a man by his talk.
Beer and Ladies
’77-punk remains the musical guideline, and textually next to a few critical texts of social structure there are always a lot of open-hearted personal texts as well. Sometimes it is also simply about the band itself (Come on, 25 yearz ago, I’m the captain, No one’s gonna tell us, This one’s for you). But above all, they cannot help it, if this is not of supreme importance for The Dirty Scums, it quite regularly goes about the chicks and the booze, or was it just the other way round ? As I am a fan of many a tasty head myself I’m probably not entirely impartial, but the birth of a Dirty Scum, their own beer, was next to their musical inheritance probably also one of the most successful accomplishments of this punkband. With many punk and beer lovers the Dirty Scum has completely brushed aside the daily pint of beer since 2007. On their own festivals it was widely applauded as well as “In den Schuymenden Bierpot”, the open-air pop-up pub the Scums have organized in summer since 2017 in the house of Dirty Pik. Together with local Christmas fairs it brings some extra money in the DIY Scums-till in a responsible way. These are all very cosy meetingplaces for kindred spirits and that with a limited choice of excellent beers. Also after the weekly rehearsal they drink at least one regional beer and for fifteen years they have been making an inventory of the unique beers that pass review this way. In the meantime the counter is heading for 600, so we are clearly dealing with unquestioned “hands-on” experts. You cannot imagine that their songs aren’t influenced by this: I don’t wanna go Home, Booze Boyz, Sunday Morning,… and be sure to remember Bob de Bouwer of course ! I think that in those fifteen years I haven’t witnessed any gig where this number wasn’t the tasteful ending. As to the chicks: does it need any further explaining: In love again, I wanna watch you, I wanna hear you come, Fuck with me, Jukebox baby, Married but lonely, …?
Own organizations
Their own organizations have already played a very important part in their complete career and that hasn’t been different in the past years. On the contrary the yearly Rock@Schuiferskapelle has never been booming like in the past years. Yes, even in the second coronayear the Scums party with a mix of local talent and tribute bands meant a true breath of fresh air in those rough times. Also the five-yearly TieltRockt!, a three-day event with bands from Tielt only (roughly thirty each time !) was a musical-cultural treasure already twice. At the third edition, however, covid put a spoke in their wheels. As to their interest Pik, Keez en Zjantie aren’t really stuck in punk and prove this clearly again with their “Schuimend Klassiek” series: a combination of classical music and an exploration of the best beer in an accessible way for a larger audience brought live in a pub room, what more can you wish for ? The Dirty Scums have already been able to celebrate a number of anniversaries too, which they have shared with chart toppers from the scene each time, as they are highly esteemed by colleagues and the media. “The Keith Richards of Flemish Punk”, “The Oldest Belgian Punkband”, and to avoid all misunderstandings: for the few bands that started before them and still sing it out, it is not easy to find a band that has existed uninterruptedly for 40 years: they survive everything and “bluvn goan” ! (keep on going !) There’s no doubt about that. The highest number of active years without interruption is without doubt on the counter of The Dirty Scums.
Never change a winning team
You can see it, actually The Dirty Scums haven’t changed much in those last fifteen years, and that’s just as well. Never change a winning team, meanwhile the line-up with these three dirties has kept upright for the greater part of their 40-year career. This way they have created a friends club, and thereby made their “way of life” their trademark: DIY in heart and soul. A micro association where each has his task and knows his powers. Keep on going uncompromisingly. Without “watering the proverbial beer”, to keep on making correct use of words. Undoubtedly many bands make better music yet, but nobody does it with the same amount of pleasure, and they all would kill for playing in a band that provides so much continuity.
On to more
What The Last Yearz will bring, and whether that means another 15 or 25 or more, cannot be predicted. In the meantime they could be able to venture personalized versions of Opa (Heideroosjes), Bompa Punk (Belgian Asociality) or their own Ol’man blues with a lot of street credibility. Meanwhile the continuation in difficult covid circumstances has been going on for a year already, but with their 40th Anniversary Gigs there’s a whole lot going on again. If you see that our old vinyl records have a real revival even outside the punk scene and that the Kids together with Funeral Dress, Red Zebra, De Brassers, are doing very well again in the Belpop 100, then maybe there is still hope that for once the so-called attention for alternative Belgian punkbands will really become evident. The Dirty Scums surely won’t take it to heart, the pogo never stops, dixit Funeral Dress, and indeed a great deal of new songs are under way. Who knows I might be knitting an appropriate sequel to this in the foreseeable future !
