In the early eighties PIK had written a few songs that he wanted to play before an audience. So he formed a band and called it THE DIRTY SCUMS which means "sale racaille" in French. The main reason to form a band was rather musically, and that’s perhaps also the main reason why THE DIRTY SCUMS still exist, and what makes them mostly different from other bands. Of course, not to be content with the political situation is also a great part of its contence, apart from the place that is reserved for the fun. In the beginning there were some changes in the line-up but the present one exists already for more than five years now, namely PIK (vocals/guitar) - ZJANTIE (drums/vocals) - JENZ (bass/vocals). In 1984 we had a female singer but after a year she left the band and we didn’t replace her. PIK took over the leadvocals from her and JENZ took over (and later also ZJANTIE) the backing vocals from PIK.

We heard from French people that gigs in France are rather rare and when there happens to be one it ends up in a mess. Here in Belgium there are a lot of gigs with local bands but also with foreign bands and the gigs are mostly well organised. The concerts mostly pass without incidents now, although we have experienced quite some exceptions to that rule in the past. But there could be done a lot more for bands e. g. there aren’t any good radio and TV programs (except if you play Top 30 music), the distribution and promotion of our records we have to do ourselves, … You see, there still could be improved a lot more. We have the feeling that we could reach more people when the promotion and distribution would be done professionally.

We don’t know because we don’t know any French jokes about Belgium and its inhabitants and we also don’t know any Belgian jokes about France. It’s a custom here to make jokes about Holland and vice versa. But nevertheless, as we like laughing, we are very curious to hear some of these jokes.

We listen to a lot of bands and to many kinds of music. First of all our favorite music, punkrock: SHAM 69, THE CLASH, SEX PISTOLS, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, X-RAY SPEX, THE VIBRATORS, U.K. SUBS, THE DAMNED, the RAMONES and many more. We also listen to hardcore and metalmusic: CYCLONE, BONELESS ONES, TOXIC REASONS, ENGLISH DOGS, GBH, EARDAMAGE, VORTEX, HEIBEL, VERBAL ABUSE, MOTORHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST, ASTA KASK, … We also listen to rock, pop, sixties, blues, hardrock e. g. ROLLING STONES, THE STOOGES, IGGY POP, AC/DC, STATUS QUO, TYLA GANG, JOE JACKSON, PATTI SMITH, LOU REED, HERMAN BROOD, THE SWEET, THE HOLLIES, … We are influenced by all those kinds of music and that’s interesting for us and for the people who listen to our music. We have played with French bands in the past like BERURIER NOIR, WASHINGTON D.C., M.S.T., SCRAPS, HEIMATLOS and we know other bands too like SHERWOOD, TROTZKIDS, we most like TROTZKIDS, SHERWOOD, FLITOX, M.S.T., KROMOSON 4, BRIGADES.

We think there will be more concurrence in business when there are no more frontiers between countries, and economically seen, that will be a good thing. There will be no more smuggling either although we wonder how they will resolve the problem Luxemburg. But generally seen, we think the Europe of 1992 will have more advantages than disadvantages.

Belgian beer is one of the best beers in the world and so we drink it a lot and sometimes too much. Our favorite beer is JUPILER but properly speaking we like them all as long as they taste well. Normally we don’t drink MORT SUBITE but we drank it once and we were dead immediately.

We play regularly, averagely once a month and uptil now we have played over a hundred times, mostly in Belgium (three times in Holland). We have trouble with cops sometimes: identitycontrols, stopping gigs before they are finished, bodysearch (when they are looking for drugs), putting us in jail because we are drunk, patrolling in the streets to give you the feeling that you are being watched, hitting people, … Cops in Belgium are annoying and they are assholes.

Normally we don’t use drugs although we have smoked a few joints in the past, but we can’t keep off the booze. We think that someone should be free to smoke marihuana just like someone is allowed to drink alcohol. But the use of soft drugs may not be a run to the use of hard drugs, when that happens you’re in a real mess.

We are going to record a third album and we have more or less concrete plans for gigs in foreign countries nl. TOULOUSE (France) and BAZEL (Switzerland) and we also like to do a tour once.
