01. Band’s story ?

In 1981 PIK formed THE DIRTY SCUMS and since then there were three line-ups. The last one was with a female singer. In 1983 she left the band and the three Scums that were left over decided not to replace her, so THE DIRTY SCUMS are: PIK (vocals and guitar) - ZJANTIE (drums) - JENZ (bass and vocals).

02. Musical influences ?

Before 1985 we only played ‘77-punkrock but nowadays we have a lot of hardcore and even speedmetal influences.

03. How is the scene in Belgium ?

Very good at the moment, there are a lot of fanzines, gigs and bands. The scene in Belgium is rather small (always the same people) but active. Some names of bands: Eardamage, No Numbers, The Repulsives, Xcreta, Capital Scum, Hatecrew, …

04. What is the good thing you see in punk and the bad one ?

The good thing about punk is pacifism, the fact that punx wanna live their own way, that they are against fascism and other injustices and that they try to do something about it. The bad thing about punk is drugs, they give us a bad name.

05. How is the youth’s situation in Belgium ?

In Belgium a lot of young people are on the dole, so it’s almost impossible for them to live on their own, because unemployed people receive very little money from the state, they can’t make future plans and that’s frustrating.

06. Do you make another thing except the band ?

We occasionally organise gigs and we used to have a fanzine, "The Truth is Revolutionary", but we gave it up.

07. Are all punx united and are punx and skins united ?

Punx are united but punx and skins aren’t. Skins come to gigs to fight and to spoil our fun. There are a few exceptions but most of the skins are violently and that’s a pity of course.

08. Does there exist a spirit for the fight against the system or do the people conform ?

The people don’t care about nothing, they are totally apathetic. They do what the government says, so they conform.

09. What’s your opinion about "Direct Action" ?

We think it’s a good thing if it’s a spontanious reaxion of all the people, but if it’s only a small terrorist group we think it’s a bad thing because if such a group gets the power of a country the people have to do what that group wants them to do, so nothing changes. Terrorists also give an alibi to the state to enlarge the policeforce and to put in the army to "protect" us and control us. A small axion group can do nothing against the power of the state if they don’t have the support of the people.

10. Are you pacifist ?

Yes, we are. Nobody of us went to the army because the army is only there for the rich and the elite, to defend their system, their power and their money. We also don’t wanna be told. FUCK THE ARMY !

11. There are a lot of people who think punk is becoming hippie, what do you think about it ?

We don’t think punk is becoming hippie because punx try to do something about the system and hippies just sit there and smoke some joints, they are passive.

12. Do you think the nazi-punx exist ?

We have never met one, maybe nazi-punx is a synonym for nazi-skins.

13. What do you think about racism, sexism, animal torture and the destruction of the nature ?

We oppose racism and sexism because everyone is equal no matter what he or she is. We aren’t vegetarians but we don’t think it’s right to torture an animal (or a human being). Mankind is killing nature but one day nature is going to kill mankind if we don’t stop raping her.

14. What’s the thing you most hate and the thing that makes you frightened ?

Thirst is the thing we most hate and we hope people will never stop making beer because that’s what really frightens us.

15. Have you recorded or taped some of your stuff ?

1985 (July) - Dirty Songs - LP
1986 (November) - The Martens single (Martens is the prime minister of Belgium, he doesn’t like it)
1986 (December) - Full Speed Ahead! - LP

16. Say what you want.

We sure gonna do that.
