GIG REPORT

The Dirty Scene Tour - 02/05/2003 - JH Dino - Lovendegem: Mise*en*Scene -  The Dirty Scums - The Thirsty Scums

OWN REPORT - 05/05/2003

This gig was the last issue of the first part of "The Dirty Scene Tour" and it was the 15th youthclub we visited with our small rock'n'roll-circus, which is a kind of unique in Belgium. Later in the evenin' we agreed with Mise*en*Scene to name the second part (which starts in the end of September) "The Thirsty Scene Tour". By travellin' to Lovendegem we crossed a beautiful region, which I'd like to visit once again by bicycle. We arrived pretty early at the club which was a bit hidden in some kind of a parochial centre. There we were welcomed by some friendly guys and were immediately offered a beer. Since I wrote in one of these reports that this is the least one can do, we are always offered a beer now on our entrance. Hey, these reports are really bein' read and do have a positive effect. One of the guys was drinkin' Leffe on this early hour, I would have liked to follow him already but you know we first had a job to do. We saw no announcements in or outside the pub for the gig of this evenin' and later we heard they even hadn't made concertposters, you should do it ! It was a rather big pub with tables made of beer-barrels, I immediately felt here like at home. They just had finished buildin' a new stage in the pub and we would be the first band to use it. The dimensions were in any case perfect to put all our gear on. They regularly have concerts in this club and apparently they have some experience in what a band needs. The sound however was not like we're used to, everythin' sounded very muffled in this place. At about 8 pm we were ready with everythin' and could taste the delicious food they had for us. In the same centre there was also a meetin' goin' on with 80-plussers 'cause we saw all the time people passin' by who were twice my age, you won't believe it.

We first thought Mise*en*Scene had brought along their kids, but it appeared to be some fans and there were also a lot of people of their hometown Deinze. Amongst the other people we also noticed Ben, former drummer and guitarplayer of Funeral Dress. It was a couple of weeks ago that M*e*S still had rehearsed and this was hearable in the first songs. It was thus at least the 15th time we saw M*e*S and we have to say that their songs still sound very OK to us after the 15th time. For the first time I understood what their song "Jason" is about, a song which has by the way a hell of a singalong-chorus. They furthermore had some fun on stage as Qrizz for instance played a version of some rock'n'roll Beatles-cover I think. The sound of Bjorn's voice wasn't all the time as it should be, probably some problems with his mike or his voice or maybe he consumed too much beers ? T-shirts of M*e*S are now also available, we too should make work once again of makin' a new one, as it's from the eighties that we still had T-shirts available.

After the gig I went to pee and I couldn't believe my eyes when I met there the beautiful wife of my old school- and punkmate Pik (the original !). What a fuckin' surprise ! Sadly he himself was there too, no, oops this is a bad joke man. We still have regularly contact but it was 13 years ago he still had visited a Dirty Scum-gig. I paid them a drink, the lady asked a white whine and the bartender told me they only served full bottles of whine, no glasses ! Well, I couldn't consider this as a problem, nor the lady. The presence of my old mate had made me a bit nervous to play. We kicked off and the sound was OK, people had a mind for dancin', it was fuckin' hot on stage and beer was already spread fully over this newly built stage. So you'll understand we played well and it was a good gig. At a certain moment some people were too enthusiast and one of our main-loudspeakers tumbled down, first against our P.A. and then took my second guitar with it while fallin' completely down. The damage was neglectable and we even didn't stop playin' as people were gentle enough to put everythin' back in place. We were satisfied of the gig when we stepped off the stage and the public too it seemed, which is of course also a bit of important.

I didn't tell you yet that the proceeds of this evenin' went to a guy called Bekie, who did some development or educational work in Bolivia. He used to be a habitual of this pub and was also an old punk, but he was at this moment in Bolivia. I think I have punkmusic from bands from most countries of South-America except for Bolivia. Not that I don't have Bolivian music, I think I was about 12 years old when I visited with my mum a concert of a Bolivian band. I still remember that they explained that one of their instruments was made from the skin of an animal that didn't make any sound when it was alive (but by bein' used in an instrument it could make sounds after its death). Later I bought a tape from the band "Los Incas" with very good traditional music from Bolivia and Peru, and I still like it at this moment.

When it was time for The Thirsty Scums, there were already some people home. We played a good set, but from my side not so intense as the Dirty gig. The beer on the stage must have hit some electrical plug 'cause I received all the time small electrical shox from my mike. But as to say it with Keez' words: we were surely worth our money. After the last song they immediately turned on the music of the pub, so people couldn't ask for encores. And talkin' 'bout the pub-music: all of the evenin' we didn't hear one punksong, although most of the time we couldn't call the music that bad either.

After the gig and the breakin' off of all our stuff, I didn't make very much contact with the natives as I of course preferred to have a chat with my mate (and with his wife too of course). There was a bit of a problem with the beer bein' not cold enough. And for what concerns the beers, the pub served the blond version of Leffe and the dark version of Westmalle. I didn't make a choice, I tasted them both fully, and in the mean time I hadn't any trouble anymore with the pils bein' not cold enough. When it was time to go, I saw one of the organisers drinkin' an apple liquor from a to me unknown brand and I really wanted to taste one. One became two, and three, and although we had done an effort to come home early, it was again 4 am when I found my bed. You should know we had to play in the evenin' of this day a gig at a punkfestival, organized by Extortion for their newly released first full-CD.
