GIG REPORT

The Dirty Scene Tour - 19/04/2003 - JH De Brug - Zwevegem: Mise*en*Scene -  The Dirty Scums - The Thirsty Scums

OWN REPORT - 23/04/2003

Zwevegem is relatively close to where we live, so it wouldn't be 3 hours of drivin' like we had to do last week for the Rekem-gig. In the afternoon I received a call from Qrizz who told he had seriously hurt his back this week and he preferred to give a shorter gig with Mise*en*Scene. I advised him to play eventually on a chair, but that didn't attract him very much. However, since Robert Plant, frontman of Led Zeppelin, gave some concerts in the seventies sittin' in a wheelchair (he had a car accident), is playin' on a chair also rock'n'roll, you know. On the road to Zwevegem, we passed a kind of a special restaurant, named Acantus, as Zjantie came to tell us that people are eatin' there completely naked, very curious about that. We arrived early at De Brug, which is a very big buildin' with different locations, includin' a nice pub. I had received this week 2 phone calls from De Brug for different information, and although their website can't be found on the net, they had given me a professional impression. It was 6.45 pm when we arrived and there were already people hangin' in the bar, this was very promisin'. De Brug means "the bridge" in English, and it's effectively next to a bridge over the cannal Kortrijk-Bossuit. I have always been a bit afraid of water (even when they serve it to me in a glass). You should also know that Gunnar, bassplayer of the legendary Sponky Business (we played at least 12 times together) drowned years ago in one of these famous waters in Bruges, close to a pub. The story goes that he fell in it while he wanted to do a pee in the water, but a rumour also says he had been in trouble with some skinheads ... In De Brug we were very much welcomed by good music and we were immediately offered a beer. We were lucky that it was Jupiler 'cause drivin' through Zwevegem we had only seen publicity for Bockor-pils on the pubs we passed. It was about 8.30 pm when everythin' was ready, we both had soundchecked and the sound was very decent. It was time to eat somethin' and the club had done a great job in preparin' a delicious meal, served by two ladies (we were too shy to ask why the service wasn't topless).

When M*e*S kicked off there were quite some people in the pub. We had been told there was a party from a youth organization a bit further and most of the habituals had chosen to go to this party. Even all the bartenders from De Brug had quit and there were now other people behind the bar than usual. M*e*S played well, the sound was very OK, but Bjorn's voice was not always on the same level, I guess he had been eaten too much from the delicious food. It was JC's birthday and his mother was also present in the pub, they did some birthday-stuff, JC also took the vocals for a song, and they didn't play at all a shorter gig, so Qrizz was broken when he quit the stage. Most of the people didn't move on the M*e*S-gig, I hoped they would when we started. Furthermore, there was no much interest in our stand and we noticed some people from JH De Broesse and the guitarplayer from The Deedees enterin' the place.

Before we started I asked the audience if they would stay sittin' on their chair, 'cause from our part we would do the gig standin' up. I didn't receive much of a response, so we started anyhow. The sound was excellent and I enjoyed the set, we really played very good. Although they did applaud loudly in the small pauses between the songs, the audience stayed sittin' on their arse. I guess they didn't go to the aforementioned party because they were too fuckin' lazy to move their fuckin' arse. Anyway I think we did a good job. M*e*S only entered the place again near the end of our gig. When they came forward I could immediately taste the smell of grass comin' out of their noses and mouths, so it wasn't hard to guess what they had been doin', haha. Even when we played Zorba's Dance, there was no one who came of his chair, I think it's the first time ever that no one danced on this song. After the gig and after the applause for the last song, there was no need for encores.

The gig of The Thirsty Scums was a bit of the same, we played well but no one moved a feet. So this was it in fact, also no encores here. Afterwards, the Deedees-guy asked if he could play on my guitar some songs, and so he played together with Zjantie on drums and Wally from De Broesse on bass some Ramones-stuff. They didn't have much response either and people were leavin' the place in fact. The Deedees will do in the near future a tour abroad together with Bad Preachers: have a good time, guys. We once were on the same bill with The Deedees on a Ramones-Tribute but for one or another reason they didn't show up then.

After havin' consumed some Leffe's at the bar we received a bit of help to load the van again, and after this we were the only ones still hangin' in the pub except for the bartenders. We had some fun on the bar and played some Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath-stuff, next to some Dutch stuff with Dutch lyrix. The Leffe's tasted good, we had good company and for some fuckin' reason it was again nearly 6 am when I finally laid down in bed. Keez and myself had to wake up early because we still had to hide this same mornin' the easter eggs for our kids ...
