GIG REPORT

The Dirty Scene Tour - 28/12/2002 - JH Brieljant - Deinze: Riot Squad - The Dirty Scums - Mise*en*Scene - The Thirsty Scums

OWN REPORT - 29/12/2002

This was a special release of The Dirty Scene Tour, it was namely the CD-presentation of the split-CD by Mise*en*Scene/The Divisive ànd the evenin' was organised by Mise*en*Scene themselves. The sale of this CD runs smoothly and if you don't have it yet, you can order it here.

JH Brieljant is another example of these youth centres based in a new buildin' and it has a built-in venue for about 300 people. There is also room for bands to rehearse and Mise*en*Scene uses one of these rooms. Back in the past we played already 2 times in a youth centre in Deinze, but at that time it was called De Mouterij and it was situated at the other side of what is now De Brieljant. In 1988 we played there with Hatecrew and our Walloonish friends Vortex with whom we played and organised a lot of gigs together (at least 15 !). In 1993 we visited once again De Mouterij with our Tournée Générale. The organisation by M*e*S was really low budget and they prooved that an evenin' can be successful by doin' so. Of course they had some help from us: The Dirty Scums played a free gig to express their gratitude towards Full Contact Resistance (or rather to Qrizz) for organisin' The Dirty Scene Tour, The Thirsty Scums played a swop-gig (no fee, but next year M*e*S will do the same for us), and our small P.A. could be hired for at least a fifth of the price of another P.A. No, we'll never become rich, that's for sure.

While settin' up our things on stage, people entered early the venue and soon it was obvious there would be a lot of people this time. Most of them were young people (for not to say kids), so once again it seemed I was the oldest one of the whole venue, haha. Keez' eleven-years-old son Joey (named after you know who), was with us, which made we had the honour to have in our ranx the oldest as well as the youngest of the crowd. As it were mostly young people of Deinze itself, we didn't know much people, however we recognized some friendly guys of Fist of Fury and Brewed in Belgium and there were also some friends present from Tielt and surroundings. Fist of Fury just had done some new recordings and Roel was so gentle to offer us already a promo-CD, thanx Roel. Fist of Fury have already released a mini-CD with the great title "The drinks are on me" and appear also on a compilation-CD released by Full Contact Records. When you have the occasion you certainly should listen to their song www.perfectgirl.com which is an amazingly perfect song.

It was about 8.45 pm when Riot Squad started their set. By then there were about 200 people in the venue. Riot Squad is a five-piece punkband with amongst them a girl (but for the rest this didn't matter) on leadguitar. They played punk and thanx to the solos of the leadguitar a very melodic variant of it. The girl was really amazin' (at least on guitar, we can't judge about her other capacities, although we're very curious about these), but guys you should let her do more backin' vocals. Riot Squad played a good set but in our opinion played a bit too slow. They only succeeded in gettin' some movement in the crowd durin' the last song but that's the lot of so many bands who have to open the night.

We followed and succeeded in gettin' some more people movin' on the dancefloor. When we may speak for ourselves, we played a very good gig. It's always fun playin' for more than a handful of people, especially when the sound is good and when songs are recognized and sung along by people. However it's strange then to notice that songs like "Martens, jij ouwe rukker" are not recognized by a young audience. Needless to say that our Saints-cover "I'm stranded" wasn't recognized at all. Anyway, 19 songs later we quit the stage, tired but satisfied.

When Mise*en*Scene started, the crowd must have been increased till nearly 300 people. While there were some metres of free space in front of the stage durin' Riot Squad, and a bit less durin' our gig, the crowd now reached the borders of the stage. M*e*S played a home gig and apparently they are loved by the youth of Deinze. All the time of their set, half of the crowd was participatin' in the pit in front of the stage. It must really be fun to be on stage now ! They played a long set with a bit of (too much) experimental things and ended with their hit "We don't wanna fight tonight", although "ended" is not really the word as they were called back loudly by the audience to play encores. It's a time ago that we've seen a gig from an undergroundband with so much participation and appreciation from the audience.

Things could only be better we thought, with playin' some Ramones-songs. However when we started a bit after midnight, only half of the crowd was left. This is also your lot when you have to play before a young audience: they have to be home at midnight. Our Ramones-stuff was played good and most of the songs were pretty fast recognized (but that should be normal, isn't it). We were asked for encores and received a lot of compliments after the gig.

Well, this had been a fine rock'n'roll evenin' up till now: good bands, free beers, a good sphere, many pretty young girls, ... Yeah, I have to mention "up till now" 'cause from the moment the last chord of the Ramones was played, the guy responsable for the music definitely spoiled the sphere and the evenin' by playin' dance or techno or house or whatever it's called, I don't know and I don't care a fuck, but this was absolutely non-rock'n'roll muzak, and is absolutely not done, guys. How for the devil's sake is it possible to spoil voluntary such a fine festival ! It seemed Mise*en*Scene couldn't do nothin' about it, so we had to bear this crime while clearin' the stage. An hour later, this fuckin' noise was still goin' on and while we felt a headache comin' up we moved to the bar to have some fun and to drink some pints in order to forget about the headache. We heard there was a very stupid quarrel goin' on between some guys of Fist of Fury and Qrizz from M*e*S, who received a smash on his face (which isn't already a pretty sight, haha (joke, Qrizz)). This is bullshit, Fisters involved, you should leave our mate alone. Let's say the muzak had strange effects on the brains of some people.

Despite the overwhelmin' noise, we had some fun. People who read these reports (are there any ?, please give us some feedback via the guestbook, we really appreciate this) will remember that one of the girls of Mise*en*Scene became sick last Saturday (for the sake of clearness: after the gig of M*e*S !). Afterwards we heard she never takes alcohol, which is of course very very bad for your health, baby. In December of last year we organised an evenin' where you could taste all kinds of special beers and had some scientific based articles published on the advantages of the moderate consumption of alcohol. We found it was our duty to deliver these articles to this girl and in the mean time to the rest of the people who still were present. Furthermore we had a chat and a drink with the singer of Riot Squad, who told us their female guitarplayer visits a classic musicschool. He himself happens to be the former bassplayer of Fist of Fury, it's a small world, and even worse, their bassplayer ís the actual guitarplayer of FoF, yes we've got some ingredients for an incest-story ! We wanted to leave but were not paid yet and Qrizz had other things to do. There was someone tellin' that the muzak was called drum'n'bass, well, I didn't know there were so many synonyms for this kind of shit. So we drunk more beers, but at a certain moment they ran out of pilsbeer and only had two sorts of beer left. This may sound unbelievable, but I've seen the stock with my own eyes: 2 sorts of beer and about 15 sorts of soft drinks (but it's possible that I already saw a bit double at that time). I tried Palm but this is not really my cup of tea, so I switched over to Carlsberg. In the mean time we got paid and by a miracle this fuckin' muzak had come to an end too. We smoked some mother nature in the outside before leavin' home, where we arrived at about 5 am. This was our last gig of 2002. Durin' the year we've done 15 gigs with The Dirty Scums and 8 with The Thirsty Scums. Well there've been worse years. 2003 will for sure be a fuckin' great live-year: you should know that there now are already planned 13 gigs with The Dirty Scums and 13 with The Thirsty Scums. See you on one of them !

THE B-TEAM - 30/12/2002

We arriveerden omstreekt kwart over 8 in den Brieljant.

Keep up the good work guys !!!!

MISE*EN*SCENE - 12/01/2003

- The Riot Squad

- The Dirty Scums
'n Zeer geslaagd optreden !

- The Thirsty Scums
Hun eigen Ramones-tribute-lied "I wanna see the Ramones" werd - traditioneel - ook netjes in de set ingepast, en "R.A.M.O.N.E.S."
