01. THE HOUSE OF THE DIRTY SCUMS

Music: Traditional / Lyrix: Pik

There is a band in Belgium
They are called The Dirty Scums
And they've been the ruin of many a poor punk
And
god I know I'm one

My mother was an anti-fan
She became crazy of our new songs
And my father, he never got used to us
Down in the house of the Scums

Oh brother, tell your friends
To live like we do
Spend your lives from day to day
Down in the house of the Scums

Come to the house of the Scums
And be drunk, be drunk
Be really drunk man
In the house of the Scums

02. IT'S MY LIFE

Music: Pik - Jenz / Lyrix: Pik

"This song was written at the time we had the idea of playin' our songs in an acoustic way in the streets. We all liked the idea but till now we have never really done it, although I hope it'll happen some day. The second verse is about people who laugh at the way we're dressed, but who are all dressed in the same impersonal ugly way."

Buyin' second hand clothes
Playin' in the street
That's my life and I like it like that
I like it like that, yeah, yeah, yeah

You can say what you want
You even dare to laugh with us
At least I have my own mind
And that can't be said of you

Refrain: It's my life, it's my mind
It's my wife, that's my style

Buyin' second hand clothes
Playin' in the street
My pants are too short
And my suit is too big

Refrain

But that's what I want
And that's what I got

03. REMEMBER AUSCHWITZ

Music: Pik / Lyrix: Jenz

"I read a book about the concentrationcamps and I was very much shocked by it. So I wanted to write something about it because nowadays fascism is coming up again and what happened forty years ago can happen again. This song is a warning, a call to fight fascism, because we don't want history to repeat again, do we ?"

Starvin' jews stumblin' all around
Till they drop dead on the ground
For the convicts there was no hope
'Round their neck was already a rope
Remember Auschwitz

Nazibrutes wanna see you bleedin'
They don't care if people are screamin'
Jerkin' while they beat you to death
In the gaschamber people takin' a last breath
It's better they don't stay here anymore

Refrain: Remember Auschwitz
Remember the nazibrutes

For six million people it was the end
We have a message for you to send
Destroy fascism now that it's still time
Otherwise you commit an awful big crime
Remember Auschwitz

Refrain

04. SALE RACISTE

Music & Lyrix: Pik

"I wrote this song after I heard about an accident in Brussels. I have been livin' over there for more than three years and the accident happened near the place I lived. As you hear French most of the time in Brussels, I wrote the song in that language too. Now about the accident: two children were crossin' the street when an ambulance passed and hit the children. One of 'em was dragged along for tens of meters. This happened just before their home, which was a cafe, while their father was lookin' through the window. The driver was in a light state of shock and when his son, who had been called upon, arrived, he wanted to comfort him. The son's words were: father, it isn't that bad, they are only strangers and there are enough of 'em."

Refrain

05. SHE LIVED RIGHT

Music & Lyrix: Pik

""She" is Jenz' grandmother who died in September '85, at the age of 79. She was a very friendly woman and we even rehearsed a lot of months in a hangar next to her home, till Jenz' father protested because his pigeons wouldn't fly anymore. She would give way all she had to please people, and I think we can learn a lot from people like her."

Jezus was right
She now lives inside
Inside my mind

She hadn't been anxious
The funeral was ridiculous
It made me vicious

Refrain: She lived right, she still lives in my mind
It isn't all over, 'cos we can take it over

You think that only the good die
And you can't find a reply
Of course she had her age

She was a good old woman
We had a lot of fun with her
And we had a lot of respect for her

Refrain

06. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THE GIRL

Music & Lyrix: Pik

"Together with "Michel Strée, …" this is one of the oldest songs we still play. The girl concerned is a girl I met after a concert of U2 (!) in December '82. I hopelessly fell in love with her, but I wasn't the only one, and she wasn't in love with me. Anyway, the story has given us a good song".

Refrain: What's the matter with the girl

She's very beautiful
All the people look at her
Why doesn't she
Look at me

I fell in love with her
Like twenty others
You should've seen her
You sure would too

All she wanna be
Is bein' very beautiful
All she has been
Is been on her own

Refrain

She's very pleasant
She makes good love
Why doesn't she
Make love with me

I think she
Isn't very happy
Why doesn't she
Write to me

In her mind
She's on her own
In the night
She's never alone

Refrain

07. SYMPTOMS OF THE GROWN-UPS

Music & Lyrix: Pik

"This is one of my favourite lyrix on this record. I wrote it after I saw back some friends with whom I used to listen to punk-music and to go to punk-gigs. However, they seemed to have changed, and that's what you'll read in the song itself."

It seems to be a disease
To live your life like a beast
To lock up your mind with a key
The key that should tell you to be free

To be afraid to meet other people again
To keep up always with the same gang again
I see it at people of my age
These are the symptoms of old age

But they don't see and they don't care
Their feelings are hidden in their hair
Even fun seems to be forgotten
Remember the times we listened to Johny Rotten

Refrain: These are symptoms of the grown-ups
They are models of the fed-ups

When the Scums go marchin' in
They wanna be in the gutter

You try to catch your jamned ideals
Under the cloack of new ideals
Under the gimmick of adult-free clothes
But nevertheless, our relationships are jokes

The people you used to know
Are now the last ones to be on the show
Return to what you used to be
Even then it's not easy for me

Talkin' about our first release
It hurts me to see your grown-up smiles
That scorn your former ideas
Come on guy, let's have real fun again

Refrain

08. SONG FOR RUDI

Music & Lyrix: Pik

"Rudi was the very first singer of The Dirty Scums. He joined us at the end of '81, and left the band at the beginning of November '82, after exactly 10 gigs. He died immediately in a car crash the 8th of February this year, on a Saturday night. When I heard about it the next morning, it sounded so incredible, so strange … Some weeks before, he had even offered us to help us with his car in case we had transport problems to arrive at our gigs. I really wrote the first two verses on the morning of Rudi's funeral, the last two some days after it. They are just simple words, and intended as such. Maybe we can make him a bit immortal with this song. I also want to dedicate this song to Rudi's parents."

On the mornin' of your funeral
I thought to write you a song
A song that would please you very much

Refrain: shalalalalalalala la
Ooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ooh

I cried a lot for you
And I thought at your parents too
But tell me Rudi, what can I do

Refrain

Many cryin' girls you left behind
But still they'll go out tonight
Like you did Saturday night

Refrain

The priest told you would be good with God
But why then does everybody cry such a lot
Twenty years is much too young
You're dead and gone
But Rudi, be comforted, only the good die young

09. MICHEL STREE, WE SUPPORT YOU

Music & Lyrix: Pik

"This is one of the first songs I wrote (at the end of '81), and this year we picked up the song again after so many years. The song still did it and we selected it for this record. It tells about a guy (he was about eighteen years I think) who hijacked a bus with eighteen schoolchildren, he forced the driver to drive to Brussels where he wanted to give a speech on the national radio. In fact it was for fun, but in Brussels they overpowered him with great military force. The last two verses are extracts of his diary. Maybe it all sounds a bit naive today, but again, the song is almost five years old, and maybe I was also a bit naive at that time …"

14th of November 1980
He rode with a bus to Brussels
With 18 hostages, it wasn't easy

He wanted to give an explanation
On the radio for the injustice
In the society accommodation

He would establish a new regime
Where kindness and equality
Would be the law the most supreme

He represented the grim impotence
The great desperation and the fury
Of all young people in this mess

Refrain: Michel Strée, we support

The constitution, political organisations
Trade-unions would be abolished
The king dethroned, the government discharged
And the rich expropriated

Hold up a printing office
Threaten the personnel
Force to press false money
And send it to Vietnam

10. ZORBA'S DANCE

Music: M. Theodorakis - Pik

11. MY GIRLFRIEND

Music & Lyrix: Pik

""My girlfriend" is a very personal song about a sad period in my life. Maybe it's an ordinary sad love song for some people. For those who are interested: afterwards it became quite all right again."

I knew a beautiful lady
And now she's let me totally crazy
I was only a toy for her love
A toy for her love

All her principles she threw away
All her love for me she gave away
It all didn't matter to her anymore
I thought she wanted to be a whore

Refrain: My girlfriend doesn't wanna see me anymore

I didn't dare to ask you
If you still loved me
Scared to hear the truth
From you …

All my life I had bad luck
Even she didn't give a fuck
And about what I am
She doesn't give a damn

The tears I had to hide
The laughs she hatefully smiled
Her look that sent me away
Her words that hurted me all the way

Refrain

12. PUNX NOT ALLOWED

Music: Pik - Bouckenooghe / Lyrix: Jenz

"After we were thrown violently out of a dancing in Tielt (the dancing is the Orlando), the cup was full (it wasn't the first time we were thrown out somewhere) and I picked up a pencil and wrote this piece of anger. They kicked us out because of our clothes and hairstyle and not because we did something wrong."

It happened on a Sunday after a gig
We went to a pub, our thirst was big
A client picked up a chair and kicked me in the head
They threw us out, punx not allowed they said

We went to a disco at half past midnight
After a while we got into a fight
They started, they refused to give us beer
The boss told us: punx not allowed here

Refrain: Everywhere we are they tell us to go
Everywhere we go people say no
They don't want us hangin' around
Punx are not allowed

They don't know anything about hospitality
We always feel their hate and hostility
Decency is what they all stand for
It isn't very decent to show your guests the door

They're filled up with hypocrisy
Stupid people narrow-minded and oh so silly
Hypocrisy is what they really stand for
Stupid people, you're a fuckin' bore

Refrain

13. A PROVOCATION OF THE STATE

Music: Pik - Jenz / Lyrix: Jenz

"A short while ago, Belgium knew a series of bomboutrages committed by the CCC, a communist terrorgroup, at least that's what they say they are. At the same time, another terrorgroup, known as the gang of Nijvel, did a series of very bloody attempts on stores and supermarkets. The attempts have an extreme-right character: an organised team (paratroopers ?) and many deads, twenty-seven up till now. The consequences of this all is the use of a massive number of police and even paratroopers, 'cause now the state has a motive to control and tiranise our country. This sad story gave me the opportunity to write these lyrix."

Terrorists shot eight people in a store
And they killed twenty people before
Bombs are explodin' all over the land
It's really gettin' out of hand

Refrain: It's a provocation of the state
And fight back before it's too late

All that violence makes me sick
Their only purpose is to cause panic
They want to make people fuckin' afraid
To establish a fuckin' police state

Refrain

Paratroopers and police in the street
That's what they want and that's what they need
It's all part of one big plan
To stimulate the call for a strong man

Refrain

They wanna put a camera in your house
They are the cat and you're the mouse
They wanna control you day and night
To see if the things you do, if they are right

Refrain

14. THEY DROPPED THE BOMB

Music: Pik / Lyrix: Jenz

"This one is written after Martens (Prime Minister of Belgium) sold Florennes (a place in Belgium where they placed sixteen missiles) to the Americans without consulting the Parliament and without consulting the people of whom the majority was against. This is a nice example of how the Belgian government cheats us. Pik had found two sentences that we could use as a refrain and at the same time I had the subject for this song."

A shockin' news on TV
You can already taste WWIII
We're now at state of war
And nothin' matters anymore

Refrain: They dropped the bomb
And the world was gone

It's gonna be a horrible day
The atomic bombs are on their way
The people are seized with fear
The end is comin', the end is near

Refrain

Death is hangin' in the air
And people start to lose their hair
Explosions, the world's on fire
Politicians, is that your desire ?

Refrain
